BYC Yoga Teacher Feature: Meet Jill Campbell

Jill Campbell: Instructor, AcroYoga Montreal

1. When was your first introduction to yoga? I had my first yoga class at the kinsmen centre in Edmonton, Alberta. I was 19. I remember feeling thrilled when we went into a shoulderstand, challenged, yet calm. Yoga has been present in my life ever since.

2. How did you get into teaching yoga? How many years have you been teaching, and where can people find your classes?
I was living in Beijing for a time from 2005 – 2007. I met a teacher from India and was immediately intrigued by his style of practice. He and I spent a Saturday together every month and so was born my first teacher training. I began sharing what i knew with fellow teachers and parents at the primary school I was teaching at. I offered a free class on Tuesdays after school and we had a fantastic group. It was also in Beijing that I began to explore Acroyoga with a circus base. When I moved to Montreal shortly after returning to North America I found Jessie and Eugene of Acroyoga Montreal and immediately there was a perfect fit.
I currently teach yoga in Montreal at Studio Bliss, Vert Prana and Acroyoga at Ashtanga Yoga Montreal. I recently traveled teaching in Costa Rica and Mexico and I’ll be heading to the Burlington Yoga Conference soon!

3. What do you love most about teaching yoga?
I get to share what I love.

4.What do you love most about practicing yoga and yoga itself?
It never ends.

5. What advice do you have for people who have never tried yoga?
There is yoga for everyone. If you try a type of practice and it doesn’t jive with what you’re looking for, try another style. You will find exactly what you need. There is a teacher for everyone. If a teacher doesn’t jive with what you’re looking for, try another one. Your perfect teacher is out there waiting for his or her new student!

BYC Yoga Teacher Feature: Meet Sukha Stephano Pandavas

Sukha Stephano Pandavas, Babaj’s Kriya Yoga
Sukha’s teaching at BYC on Sunday,  May 6, 11 am- 12:30 pm: Learn the 18 Postures of Babaji’s Kriya Hatha Yoga

1.  When was your first introduction to yoga?

My first encounter with yoga and Indian culture was through the music and philosophy of the Beatles and the sixties counter culture movement revolution….

2 . How did you get into teaching yoga? How many years have you been teaching, and where can people find your classes?

I have been involved with Kriya Yoga for about 8 years now… have been studying , working , and recently teaching, in Babaji Kriya Yoga Center in Southern Quebec, Canada, where we give free yoga classes to the local community.  There are also initiations and specific retreats here at the ashram…

3. What do you love most about teaching yoga?

It s the transmission of wisdom and energy and giving and sharing with all people alike, which for me is essential in the yoga philosophy.  Helping people to understand their body and their environment through a yoga perspective …

4. What do you love most about practicing yoga and yoga itself?

Yoga helps me so much to see through the fog of life… it gives me tools to work with on a daily bases, to cope with the
hardship of ever day dilemmas. Yoga helps me to LET GO  of so unimportant  things related to my day to day living and to focus more on the important things of life…

5. What advice do you have for people who have never tried yoga?

Yoga is a tested scientific method that can help you in your everyday living condition. What’s fun about yoga is that it’s NOT a competitive sport and it’s NOT rigorous training activity.  Yoga can be practice alone or with people sharing, at your own pace. Yoga allows you to slowly evolve through your everyday situations by working on your body but also your mind and awareness. It’s a complete system; proven throughout time by masters who’ve practiced yoga … it can be gentle or rigorous.  You set you own limits, always trying to reach further as you go along the pathway … WOW YOGA IS JUST FANTASTIC …DONT YOU THINK? !!!!!!.

Much love to you all!
- Sukha.

BYC Yoga Teacher Feature: Meet Myra Lewin

Myra Lewin: MA, ERYT-500, Advanced Clinical Ayurvedic Practitioner

1. When was your first introduction to Yoga?

My first introduction to Yoga was in 1972 when a friend took me to a class. I had no idea what it was. The teacher was a man with a very smelly beard. We did some breathing and body movements that scared me and I got out of there as fast as I could. It wasn’t until 1987 that I heard about it again. I was going through some challenges in life and a friend suggested a weekly meditation class with Jack Kornfield. My life really started changing from that point on.

2. How did you get into teaching Yoga? How many years have you been teaching, and where can people find your classes?

As a teen I taught swimming, then accounting and behavioral management at the university levels. Teaching is in me. My first time in India I was so attracted to a carving of the goddess Saraswati (goddess of the arts, creativity, and teaching) that I bought and mailed it back to the states. I had no idea who she was at the time.
After my first Yoga asana class in 1989, the teacher said “you should be a teacher.” It seemed incredible that she would say that since I was sitting on 6 blankets and could not bend over more than one quarter of the way. Even though I was in terrible pain and felt tortured through the entire class, I knew I was coming back!
I started teaching classes and private sessions full time in 1994. These days I focus on training teachers, private sessions, workshops and retreats. My Ayurveda practice is now at the basis of all of my teaching. It is my intention to reach as many people as possible to spread the word of Ayurveda and Yoga.
I currently live on Kauai in the Hawaiian islands.

3. What do you love most about teaching Yoga?

I love the opportunity to be with people as they experience more of themselves in their practices. Seeing people make that inner connection touches me in a deep place of knowing.

4. What do you love most about practicing Yoga?

Having a foundation to remind me of who I am as eternal Spirit; especially pranayama and meditation that have me continue to develop my relationship with my innermost Self.

 5. What advice do you have for people who have never tried Yoga?

It is a vast tradition with many practices and techniques. Work with a chunk that appeals to you and take small steps. It is about your direct experience, not what someone else tells you it should be.
Remember that it is a state of being that you are moving toward. Yoga is union of body, mind, and spirit. With this ultimate goal in mind, be kind and gentle with yourself.
